Why give your horse PharmaHorse Magnesium?

Magnesium is an important mineral for the muscular and nervous system, bones, water and energy management and the metabolism. Magnesium is responsible for transmitting signals to the muscles. It is also responsible for relaxing the muscles. Magnesium is necessary for the absorption of calcium in the bones and prevents a build-up of calcium in other tissues.

A recent study has revealed that 20% of healthy horses suffer from a magnesium deficiency and this percentage increases to over 50% for sick horses. It has emerged from the same study that almost half of the feed tested had a magnesium level below the standard minimum. This means that in half of all cases, raw feed alone, provides insufficient magnesium. Concentrated feeds often contain either insufficient magnesium or proportionally too much calcium. An additional nutritional supplement containing magnesium can have a surprisingly good effect.

Tip: Give competition horses suffering from stress magnesium.

Is PharmaHorse Magnesium suitable for young horses?
Young, introverted or highly strung horses can be susceptible to stress. This can be detrimental to development and training. Stress can result in physical contraction and stable vices. Magnesium has a calming effect.

When should magnesium be used?

  • muscle tension
  • intestinal cramps, muscle cramps and physical cramps
  • muscle pain
  • stress

Magnesium Bisglycinate vs. Magnesium Citrate:
Magnesium Bisglycinate is not the only form of Magnesium that PharmaHorse sells. What is the reason that we sell two types and what is the difference? Magnesium Bisglycinate and Magnesium Citrate are both organic Magnesium compounds. Magnesium Bisglycinate is bound (chelated) to two molecules of the amino acid Glycine. Because of this, the body views the Magnesium as an amino acid and it will only be absorbed in the small intestine by means of amino acid receptors. The body absorbs Magnesium Citrate sooner in the gastrointestinal tract. For horses that have difficulty in absorbing nutrients, or have a serious Magnesium deficiency, it is possible that Magnesium Citrate will not be sufficient. In that case, we advise Magnesium Bisglycinate.

Horses with poor kidney function may only be given magnesium in consultation with a veterinarian!
